Multicultural Reporting- LGBT Community

Here are some resources I found that cater to the LGBT community:

• Point Foundation-  is a national LGBT scholarship foundation. It also provides guidance and hope to students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

• Gay Straight Alliance Network International- The mission of this organization is to educate and meet the needs of LGBT youth around the nation.

• International Lesbian and Gay Association- is the only worldwide federation campaigning for lesbian, gay, trans gender and bisexual rights. It aims to work for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual people and their liberation from all forms of discrimination.

City of Ink art viewing receives good reviews from crowd

 City of Ink Tattoo Shop and Art Gallery attracted nearly 60 people last Friday night with its art viewing event.

            The event brought out a diverse crowd of students and Atlanta locals, most of which are regular shop customers.

            “This is my first time coming to an art viewing at City of Ink, but I’ve gotten all of my tattoos here,” Spelman College sophomore, Cydnee Williams said.

            As an art gallery, City of Ink hosts different art exhibits throughout the year.

            Friday’s exhibit featured a variety of art work, a live DJ and an open bar.

            “The environment was really cool. I liked the fact that there was a live DJ,” Spelman College sophomore, Lakin Starling said. “I was able to vibe to the music and admire the art that was displayed.”

            The art featured at the exhibit contained controversial subject matter such as the HIV/AIDs epidemic and fornication and sin.

            There was a painting of a weeping man stretched out on the cross and shooting sins such as fornication and jealousy into his veins as if her were shooting up drugs.

            “You could really feel the artist’s pain and frustration with life in the piece,” Spelman College senior Candice Manier said.

            Another work illustrated the HIV/AIDs epidemic as a black woman dressed in red and giving birth to the world.

            “That was probably my favorite piece of work because it said what so many people are afraid to admit,” Starling said. “The piece was raw and real. I like that.”

Tattoos and Makeup

This article discusses the popularity and dangers of cosmetic tattooing. I would categorize this story as descriptive or a day in life because the first couple of the paragraphs describe the daily routine of a woman who received cosmetic tattooing on her eyebrows and eyeliner.

Arizona lawmakers are contemplating passing a bill that allows professors and students over the age of 21 to have firearms in college classrooms. I would categorize the article as an investigative piece because it discusses a nation wide issue of gun control and shootings that have occurred over the past few years on college campuses.

Brief Summary:


Human rights activists and reporters are being attacked by gangs and supporters of President Hasni Mubarak. Twenty four reporters were detained in 24 hours, some from the Washington Post and the New York Times and 21 journalists were assaulted. The government has accused media outlets of being sympathetic towards protesters and encouraging them to fight to overthrow the Mubarak.

• The lead is the equivalent to the topic sentence. The lead of this article is as follows: " Menacing gangs backing President Hosni Mubarak attacked journalists and human rights activists Thursday in an ugly turn inEgypt's crisis as government opponents pushed supporters out of Cairo's main square in a second day of battles."
• The first quote appears in the middle of the article.
• Washington Post summarizes what the source says before actually quoting the source. For example, "Mubarak, 82, told ABC television in an interview that he was fed up and wants to resign. But he said he can't for fear the country would sink into chaos. He said he was very unhappy about the two days of clashes in central Tahrir Square."
• In this article, the writer uses a variety of direct quotations and paraphrases of sources included in the article. A source is attributed at least six times.
• The writer summed up the article with another anecdote. The writer tied the end and the beginning of the article together by reporting 1 million foreign tourists have fled the country.
• Approximately 2-3 sentences make up each paragraph.

Objectivity in Journalism

To be objective in journalism is to avoid using or hinting at any opinion in an article. Objectivity in journalism includes solid facts. Quotations from relevant sources should be the only place where any opinion is found and it should be that of the source. Moreover, to practice objectivity in a story, a writer must cover the story from all angles and not just from one perspective
