City of Ink art viewing receives good reviews from crowd

City of Ink Tattoo Shop and Art Gallery attracted nearly 60 people last Friday night with its art viewing event.
The event brought out a diverse crowd of students and Atlanta locals, most of which are regular shop customers.
“This is my first time coming to an art viewing at City of Ink, but I’ve gotten all of my tattoos here,” Spelman College sophomore, Cydnee Williams said.
As an art gallery, City of Ink hosts different art exhibits throughout the year.
Friday’s exhibit featured a variety of art work, a live DJ and an open bar.
“The environment was really cool. I liked the fact that there was a live DJ,” Spelman College sophomore, Lakin Starling said. “I was able to vibe to the music and admire the art that was displayed.”
The art featured at the exhibit contained controversial subject matter such as the HIV/AIDs epidemic and fornication and sin.
There was a painting of a weeping man stretched out on the cross and shooting sins such as fornication and jealousy into his veins as if her were shooting up drugs.
“You could really feel the artist’s pain and frustration with life in the piece,” Spelman College senior Candice Manier said.
Another work illustrated the HIV/AIDs epidemic as a black woman dressed in red and giving birth to the world.
“That was probably my favorite piece of work because it said what so many people are afraid to admit,” Starling said. “The piece was raw and real. I like that.”
City of Ink is located in the downtown Atlanta art district area. Visit their website to find out more about art viewings and hours of operation.

  1. Jordan, I wanted to re-read your article and see the way you revised it and I think it reads much better now. I think the flow of the article has really improved. Some of the quotes could be paraphrased and I think the title and lede still needs a little tweeking, but overall much better :)

  2. I love that your less is straight to the point. It's very effective in informing the reader of what what is to come. I would recommend watching your wording. For example in paragraph seven you couldve used commas instead of the word and in the last sentence. I do like your use of quotes, but I wish your piece would've given me more information about the atmosphere at this event being that the pieces were polemical.

  3. Jordan, I think you chose an interesting event to cover. But I didn't quite understand what the art viewing was for/who it was for. It would have been nice to know some of the artists names, what kind of art they usually produce, if they were local artists etc. Also, I would have introduced the first quote a paragraph later so you would've had more time to set the scene as to what kind of tattoo shop city of ink is and how the art they were showing did or didn't match that. But, I think you have good quotes from showgoers about how the art impacted them or why it was important which was really good.

  4. Jordan, your article is structured very well, and written concisely, which makes it easy to comprehend. Since we were given a substantial wordlength, I think it would have been good for you to offer more info about the tattoo shop. I think you should have also provided more of an explanation about what the event was, what it was for, and who sponsored it. I think that would have added more of a context for the artwork on display. I also think you could have included quotes or mentioned ppl other than Spelman students, just for variety and to acknoweldge that more than just Spelman students attended the event. The first sentence in the 8th graph was worded awkwardly, so it was at first difficult to understand. Rather than breaking up the phrase, it would have been better to say "shooting sins into his veins." Overall, good article!
